California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
After a quarter-century span, no portion of California is experiencing dryness. This landmark event follows grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.
An Update Shows An Absence of Drought
The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that the entire state is free from dry or drought conditions. This development was driven by weeks of above-normal rainfall that topped up water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays
The journey here included intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, electrical failures, and fatalities. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January washed away those remaining dry spots.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern
However, authorities caution that the end of drought status should not be confused with being out of the woods. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies a significant portion of the state's usable water as it runs off, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to make predictions for the annual water supply.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
While the drought map shows a clean slate, attention turns to maintaining this positive water situation for the rest of the year.
